Senior Tutor and Lecturer in Medieval History
Dr Bernard Gowers

Bernard Gowers is a historian of western Europe during the central middle ages.  His research focuses on West Francia (France) from the tenth to twelfth centuries, in particular ecclesiastical life.  

As Senior Tutor, Dr Gowers is responsible for the day-to-day running of the teaching programme at Middlebury-CMRS. He deals with academic  from potential applicants, and teaches some history classes.  In addition to his work at M-CMRS, he is also a Fellow by Special Election at Keble College, and a member of the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford.

Dr Gowers was educated at the universities of Oxford (Christ Church) and Manchester.  Prior to his appointment as Senior Tutor at Middlebury-CMRS, he was Lecturer in European Medieval History at King’s College, London. He has also worked as College Lecturer at Balliol College and Brasenose College, University of Oxford.
