How Do I Apply?

To apply to study at Middlebury-CMRS please visit the Middlebury Schools Abroad website.

Academic decisions on applications are made by the Academic Committee at Middlebury-CMRS, which consists of the program's faculty, who are all based in the UK.

Decisions are made on the basis of academic merit, including preparedness to study in a new academic environment.  This is assessed by each applicant's materials, including the admissions statement, GPA, full transcript, and two faculty recommendations.  The Academic Committee may on occasion ask for examples of written work produced for specific courses, and/or additional faculty recommendations.

The minimum GPA requirement for applicants is usually 3.5.  Many of our students have much higher GPAs.  Exceptions might in some circumstances made for applicants with a lower GPA, taking into account the other elements in the process, detailed above.

Potential applicants from the International Christian University in Japan should note that requirements are somewhat different.  Please contact the senior tutor directly for further details.

Students may apply for one or two semesters.  These semesters need not be contiguous, and need not be in the same academic year. We do not accept applications for three or more semesters.

Students admitted to the programme for one semester may apply for a second semester while in Oxford, although should be aware that this may have immigration/visa implications.

Course choices: Applicants should consult with advisors/department chairs at their home institution to ensure that their course choices fit any major/minor/distribution requirements. The Academic Committee may advise applicants if course choices appear to overlap with each other and/or with courses at an applicant’s home institution.  Because weekly essay tutorials are a distinct element of Middlebury-CMRS’s pedagogy, students are advised to choose no more than one language tutorial.

The senior tutor is available to answer questions from potential applicants.

Any complaints about the applications procedure should be directed in the first instance to the principal.
